I took my son to an amazing kite flying festival on the beach recently. As a family we have only ever flown single line kites, and I thought it would be good to see if he was interested in flying something a bit more challenging.
It was a great festival with lots of dual line kite flyers down on the beach and my son was captivated by it all. He was absolutely amazed by the kites; we sat and watched them spin one way and then the other, zooming up high and diving back to earth, gracefully pulling up at the last minute. It was as if the kites were dancing across the sky. I couldn’t believe how many tricks they could do or how exciting it was watching them fly around the sky. He was really excited to see other children his own age flying the kites and I could tell he was a little bit envious. Not surprisingly he hasn’t stopped asking for a new kite since we went to the festival so the other day I went looking for something small that he could learn with.
I hadn’t realized that there would be so many kites to chose from, everything from small deltas to huge power kites. The dual line stunt kites came in different shapes and a wide range of colours and materials. I choose a little dual line stunt kite, made with bright blue and green material, and kept it as a surprise until our next trip to the beach. He was so excited when I handed it to him, I think he thought we were just going to play with the single line kite, his eyes lit up when I gave him the new one. It was actually really simple to put together and I am sure he could do it on his own. We had a talk about how to launch it and how to lay the lines out in relation to the wind, and then he stood there ready for his first flight. I gently launched the kite upwards and he pulled on the handles, even in a light wind the little kite took off quickly. I have never seen him so excited, he very quickly got the hang of it and was soon whizzing about the sky. We had a few crash landings and I was surprised and very pleased to see the kite was undamaged, largely due to the new modern materials that it is made out of.
He spent hours on that first day, learning how to feel the wind and how quickly the kite would turn. He even began getting the hang of diving down and pulling up at the last minute. The old single line kite has been a great learning experience for him and now I think he will get more fun out of his new kite.
He’s told me it’s the best present he has ever had and is already talking about getting a bigger one. I have to say I love going down the beach now and watching him fly, although I think I will have to get a kite of my own. Perhaps a dual line power kite for the big kid in me.
Take the challenge and try a dual line stunt kite today. You’ll be blown away by the thrill. Order one for yourself today.
